A united heart

Often when we were serving as missionaries in East Africa we would be driving on rough dirt roads and up ahead I would see some goats in the way. The goats would see the vehicle coming and then would begin a comical routine. Unlike the cows which would just pick a side of the road, one or the other, and head towards it to get out of our way - the goats would be undecided. First they would dart to the right side, then change their mind and run across the road to the left, then change their mind again and head back to the right! All the while the vehicle was getting closer and closer - they were in danger of getting run over!

The Bible says in Psalm 86:11,

“Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.”

Those goats are an example of a divided heart. The Psalmist was aware of his own tendency to be like the goats - to have a divided heart. His prayer was that God “unite” his heart.

Do you have a divided heart? You fear God, but you also fear other people’s opinion of you too much? You trust God, but you trust yourself too much? You love God, but you love money too much? You hate sin, but you love some sin?

Make the prayer of Psalm 86:11 to be your prayer.
