It is one thing to not understand what the Bible is saying. It is another to try to change what the Bible is saying to fit your desires! People do that all the time. They read something in the Scripture that challenges what they believe or what they do, so they begin twisting the Bible to fit their own desires. They distort the Scripture.
This has been going on for a long time. Read what Peter wrote:
“and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul…wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things…which the untaught and unstable distort…to their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:15-16
Peter was saying that Paul’s writings, which were Scripture, were being distorted by people. But notice what was the result. Destruction. But whose destruction? The ones who were doing the distorting!
That is the way it works. If you twist Bible verses around to fit your own prejudices or beliefs or practices - in the end it will be you that tastes destruction. You’ll destroy yourself!
What begins with a selfish desire to protect yourself from the penetrating and oftentimes convicting message of the Bible, ends with the realization that you were hurting yourself all along.
Don’t distort the Scripture. Accept it as it is. Let God bring life to you through it.
